Project Synopsis

Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is a world-class football venue. It is situated in the Eastern Cape Province, overlooking the North End at the heart of the city. The stadium is one of three built along the coast in anticipation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

It's seating capacity of 48 000 boasts 150 VIP suites, 60 business suites, a sports clothing shop, a gymnasium, 500 parking bays, as well as lecture and function rooms.

Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is earmarked to host eight games - five first round qualifiers, one second round match, one quarter final and the third place play off. This stadium was not only completed on time, but was also the first of the new additions to be completed.

  • The Nelson Mandela Bay stadium structure is a futuristic soccer stadium, which will be incorporated within a multi-purpose facility specifically designed to serve the community for years to come.
  • The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium was the first of five new stadiums to start construction.
  • On the 16th of June 2009 (Youth Day in South Africa), the stadium played host to a British and Irish Lions tour match. The game was between the Lions and the newly launched Southern Kings franchise. The game was attended by over 35 000 fans.
  • On the 4th of July 2009, the stadium hosted the 2009 edition of the Premier's Cup. The teams contesting the cup were Super sport United, Kaizer Chiefs, Bloemfontein Celtic and Bay United. 20 000 fans attended this event.
  • On the 23rd of July 2009, the stadium hosted a leg of the Vodacom Challenge. The match involved Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. The winner, Kaizer Chiefs, went on to face Manchester City in the final of the challenge.
  • The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium's proximity to the N2 highway means it will be no more than a 15 minute drive to the city's main hotel hub.
